Dr Carman LEE
- Associate Professor, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University
Dr Lee Ka Man is currently an associate professor in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. She is the program leader of BSc(Hons) Enterprise Engineering with Management. She obtained her PhD and BEng degree from The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. Her main research areas include Industrial Engineering, Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Wireless Sensor and Actuator Network (WSAN), Cloud Computing and Big Data Analytics. As of now, Dr Lee has published over 130 articles in various international journals and seminars. She was awarded Silver Medal in the 47th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva in 2019 and Outstanding Paper Award of Emerald Network Awards in 2019. Dr Lee also serves as the Lab-in-Charge of PolyU's Cyber-Physical Systems Laboratory.
Human Robot Collaboration
Led by Dr Carman LEE, Dr Yuk-Ming TANG & Dr Pai ZHENG, this research project uses AI assisted image recognition and statistical techniques to establish the relationships between features of non-verbal communication (facial expressions, body posture and gestures) of customers and their satisfaction with products/services. In addition, an intelligent system will be developed which users can obtain useful information such as customers’ satisfaction by their expressions, body posture and gestures as well as the online customer review.
Based on the non-verbal communication of human, the team has exploited a system of Human Robot Collaboration which demonstrates how the robotic arm assists human by a gesture. This study can help the team to get a holistic scene understanding that contributes to proactive Human-robot collaboration.

Big Data Analytics for Product and Service Design
Led by Dr Carman Lee with Dr Yuk-Ming Tang & Dr Pai Zheng as Collaborating Investigators, the project utilises deep learning algorithms to investigate customers’ cognitions and emotions by analysing biometric data (facial expressions and body gestures) and establishing the relationships between these data and the customers’ preferences for different products/services. The developed technologies provide personalised product/service recommendations and insights for product/service design.
Cyber-physical systems to facilitate product-service innovation
In the digital era, the use of immersive technology, consisting of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), is gradually taking hold and widespread in our daily life. Led by Dr. Carman LEE, the research project exploits the ability of gesture control to command music streaming applications when using MR-enabled smart glasses. Users’ gestures are effectively recognised by applying our AI-empowered algorithms, and thus a number of skeleton joints are built and visualized for computations.
The above capability opens up more opportunities to develop cyber-physical systems that encourage more product and service innovation to benefit our daily lives and society.
