Dr Yuk-Ming TANG

Dr YM Tang received his B.Sc. and M.Phil. from The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He was awarded the Ph.D. degree from the same university. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow after graduate at a local hospital. Currently, he is the Teaching Fellow at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Dr Tang is the Lab-in-charge in Integrated Product Design (IPD) and deputy Lab-in-charge of the Integrated Product Design Laboratory and Ng Tat Lun (NTL) Digital Factory (DF) at PolyU. His research interests include artificial intelligence (AI), Virtual reality (VR)/ Augmented reality (AR), computer aided design (CAE), computer aided engineering (CAE), finite element modeling (FEM), and healthcare applications. Recently, he has published over 50 international articles. Dr Tang is the associate editor or editorial board of several renowned journals. In recent years, he has been the project coordinator or member of several large-scale projects with funding over HK$20 million.
Human Robot Collaboration
Led by Dr Carman LEE, Dr Yuk-Ming TANG & Dr Pai ZHENG, this research project uses AI assisted image recognition and statistical techniques to establish the relationships between features of non-verbal communication (facial expressions, body posture and gestures) of customers and their satisfaction with products/services. In addition, an intelligent system will be developed which users can obtain useful information such as customers’ satisfaction by their expressions, body posture and gestures as well as the online customer review.
Based on the non-verbal communication of human, the team has exploited a system of Human Robot Collaboration which demonstrates how the robotic arm assists human by a gesture. This study can help the team to get a holistic scene understanding that contributes to proactive Human-robot collaboration.

Big Data Analytics for Product and Service Design
Led by Dr Carman Lee with Dr Yuk-Ming Tang & Dr Pai Zheng as Collaborating Investigators, the project utilises deep learning algorithms to investigate customers’ cognitions and emotions by analysing biometric data (facial expressions and body gestures) and establishing the relationships between these data and the customers’ preferences for different products/services. The developed technologies provide personalised product/service recommendations and insights for product/service design.
